How to set up a VPN on Android

For most personal VPN services, the simplest setup is the provider’s official Android app. Android also supports saved VPN profiles, often used with settings supplied by a workplace or network administrator. Menus and features can differ by device maker and Android version.

Personal VPN app

Install and connect through the official app

  1. Choose the provider carefullyReview its privacy policy, ownership, plan limits, and technical evidence. Get the app from Google Play or the provider’s official instructions.
  2. Sign in and allow the VPN requestOpen the app, sign in if required, choose a server or recommended connection, then approve Android’s connection request.
  3. Confirm it is connectedCheck the app status and Android’s VPN indicator. If useful, compare your public IP before and after using a trusted lookup page.
Android settings

Find the VPN controls

On many Android devices, open Settings → Network & internet → VPN. If the menu is different, search Settings for “VPN” or check the phone maker’s support pages. The Settings screen can show installed VPN profiles and apps, and may provide options to disconnect or forget a saved profile.

Google’s Android instructions describe adding a manual profile using information from an administrator. Do not guess server names, credentials, or protocol details; request the correct configuration from the service or network administrator.

Optional controls

Always-on VPN and blocking connections

Some Android versions and VPN configurations offer an Always-on option. Supported devices may also offer a setting to block connections outside the VPN. These controls can help keep a VPN active, but they can also stop internet access when the VPN cannot connect. Options differ between app-based and manually added configurations.

Understand the effect before enabling a block. If the VPN disconnects, a block-without-VPN setting may intentionally leave apps offline until the VPN reconnects or you change the setting. Read the VPN app and device maker’s guidance first.
Good habits

Keep the setup under your control

  • Install updates for Android and the VPN app.
  • Remove profiles you no longer recognize or use, after checking they are not managed by your employer or school.
  • Review split-tunneling and per-app routing settings if your provider offers them.
  • Use the provider’s support channel for errors; never share passwords or configuration keys in a public post.
Battery and connections

Expect device differences

Battery optimization, manufacturer software, mobile data transitions, and other VPN or security apps can affect background connections. If the VPN drops, first review the provider’s troubleshooting instructions and Android battery settings for that app. Change one setting at a time so you can undo it.

Common questions

Android VPN FAQ

Does Android have a VPN built in?

Android includes support for VPN connections and VPN apps, but a VPN connection still needs compatible service details or an app. Availability of any separately bundled service depends on device, country, and current provider terms.

Should I use an app or add a VPN manually?

Use the VPN provider’s official app for a personal subscription unless its instructions say otherwise. Manual setup is useful when an administrator or provider gives you compatible connection details.

Why can’t I find Always-on VPN?

It may be unavailable for your Android version, profile type, or app configuration. Google notes that app-based VPN setups may not show this option. Check your device maker’s documentation.

Will my Android VPN protect every app?

That depends on the app, Android settings, and any per-app routing or split-tunneling rules. Check the provider’s documentation and test the apps you rely on.
