VPN vs. Smart DNS: what’s the difference?
A VPN routes supported traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. Smart DNS usually changes how selected domain lookups are handled to support specific services, but it does not provide the same encrypted tunnel. They solve different problems.
Routing and encryption are the key differences
| Question | VPN | Smart DNS |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | Routes selected or device-wide traffic through a VPN server using an encrypted tunnel. | Typically redirects or alters selected DNS requests for supported services; implementations vary by provider. |
| Encrypts traffic? | The tunnel encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN endpoint; HTTPS continues to protect the browser-to-site connection. | Generally does not encrypt your overall internet traffic or create a VPN tunnel. |
| Changes the public IP? | For tunneled requests, websites generally see the VPN server’s public IP. | Usually does not route all traffic through another server, so your connection’s public IP can remain visible. |
| Typical setup | VPN app or supported router configuration. | Provider-specific DNS settings or compatible device configuration. |
| Trade-off | May add overhead or affect speed and local network access. | May work on some devices without a VPN app, but offers less network privacy and coverage. |
You need network protection
- You want supported traffic routed through a VPN endpoint.
- You want to change the public IP visible to websites for tunneled traffic.
- You need an encrypted device-to-VPN connection on a network you do not control.
- You want app or device-wide VPN features such as a kill switch, if supported.
You need service-specific compatibility
- A device cannot run the provider’s VPN app, but the provider supports it with Smart DNS.
- You need only the supported DNS-based service behavior and understand that general traffic is not tunneled.
- You are comfortable configuring DNS according to the provider’s official instructions.
Ask which requests are redirected, which devices are supported, whether setup depends on your current IP address, and what happens to ordinary traffic.
VPN and Smart DNS FAQ
Is Smart DNS more private than a VPN?
Usually it provides less network privacy because it does not create a VPN tunnel for all traffic. The details depend on the service, but DNS redirection alone does not encrypt your general internet traffic.
Is Smart DNS faster than a VPN?
It may add less processing because it does not tunnel and encrypt all traffic, but actual performance depends on your connection, provider, device, and service. There is no universal speed result.
Can I use Smart DNS and a VPN together?
Provider and device behavior varies. Their DNS or routing settings may conflict, so follow the official instructions for the specific service rather than combining configurations by guesswork.
Does a VPN encrypt DNS queries?
Many VPN apps route DNS through the VPN tunnel, but behavior depends on the provider and configuration. Check its documentation and use a DNS leak test if you need to verify a specific setup.
